The first book is actually good – I enjoyed it, anyway. They are all psychically connected to one another, and they rarely, rarely procreate, but not from want of trying!!! When they do manage to have an offspring, the baby is usually male, leading to a very lopsided population, and thus the family is dying out. They can only drink fruit juice and all other foods make them ill they need blood to survive and they need to bury themselves in the earth during the day and draw from the earth for healing. The Carpathians’ duty to control these “fallen” members of their race is to hunt them down and kill them. Those that kill humans are considered vampires and their decision to kill their prey makes them into consciousless monsters. The Carpathians are vampire creatures – only they don’t prey on humans to the point of killing them. Here’s a summary of anything and everything you need to know about the Carpathian books. Otherwise, I won’t make you or anyone you know abuse the library or your own pocketbook to procure this tripe. Still, the constant threats of life on the water present just enough tension to keep this novella afloat. Rocklyn conjures Iraxi’s precarious position in fluid, lovely prose, though the tight focus on her pregnancy causes the narrative to feel stagnant at times, as the ark lacks direction both literally and metaphorically, and the world that came before is only hinted at. Rocklyns extraordinary debut is a lush, gothic fantasy about the prices we pay and the vengeance we seek. As Iraxi’s due date comes ever closer, a darker fear takes root: that her baby may be something other than human. But Iraxi questions the morality and purpose of bringing life into such a disastrous environment: razorfangs circle in the water, the refugees scrape by on a dwindling supply of rosehip water and beans, and interpersonal conflict abounds. Now Iraxi, who had been a commoner on land, is in the final days of a pregnancy, and many on the ark view her unborn child as a sign of hope. Butler We are a people who do not forget. Flowers for the Sea is a dark, dazzling debut novella that reads like Rosemarys Baby by way of Octavia E.
